Yesterday, my fiancé and I are on the way home from collecting tools and some odds and ends from a house we are selling across the bay in Tampa. Just blocks from home, we get behind a 1980's Porsche Carrera, one with the big whale tail. Just a glance told me this one was not built for the US market. Nice. We follow it in to a left turn lane and then the inevitable happens. The light turns green, the Porsche doesn’t go.

I can see the driver waving at me that he’s got a problem. So, doing what any good Oppo would do, I hoped out and offered help. He’s pretty sure he’s out of gas and that the gauge light has finally crapped out. Ironically, there is a gas station just across the intersection, but it’s not safe to push it. There is a parking lot to our right, but across two busy lanes of traffic. With just few words between us, my fiancé starts to position our 1995 Ranger to block oncoming cars while Porsche guy and I push it across the road to the parking lot.

Normally, we have a large gas can in the truck as our fuel gauge has a mind of it’s own. But we took it out as we were loading up the truck with crap from the aforementioned house. But again, with no more than a few words (that’s why I love her!), she bolted the few blocks to our house to retrieve the gas can from our front porch and was back in a flash.

In the few minutes she was gone, Porsche guy tells me a bit about the car. He bought in new in 1983 in Austria (I was right!). At some point after he imported it, the car fell victim to the revised import laws and didn’t get driven much until it was deemed “legal” again. It looked like it had 118,000 and change on the odometer (don’t know it miles or kilometers), so it’s been well loved. It’s also currently missing 2nd and 4th gear. He was on his way to drop it off to get fixed when all this happened.

After some chatting, we gave the Porsche some petrol and she fired right up! He was kind enough to pop the back open for me to gaze upon the Carrera’s air-cooled glory! So beautiful. So pure. So simple. As we parted ways, he slipped me a $20 for our help. He insisted. So, thanks for the lunch, Porsche guy. It was out pleasure to help.

Sounds like it would bond well with K-Rolls family 911.

Now I’m just waiting for the F12 Berlinetta that lives somewhere in the neighborhood to break down so I can help it!

Nice! I have a bunch of family in Sarasota and my company has a branch in St. Pete. Thinking of buying a condo in the area in the next few years so I can winter down there (I live in Cleveland).

Cool. It’s a great place. I had been in Tampa for ever, except for a brief stint in St Pete several years ago.

It’s so much more relaxed over here. We can walk to downtown for a night out; no need to worry about having too much to drink. We can do it up at a nice restaurant and then head across the street to one of Jack Kerouac’s old haunts for drinks. Lots of great local music here, too. Love it. We walk to the St Pete Grand Prix, too. It’s amazing.

Cleveland. Haven't been in a really long time. I did take a 10 vacation to Cincinnati back in 2008.
